Part Copying

Suggested minimum part-copying fees:

Copying has traditionally been charged by the page or half-page of completed part or parts, a standard page being ten staves with four bars per stave. Five staves or less is regarded as half a page and accordingly charged at the half-page rate. Two staves are allowed on the first page for the title of the work.

Rates based on an update of 1991 figures would be $5–$9 plus gst per page, with transposition, piano parts, lyrics treated as extras at $1.10–$1.50 per page (e.g. a copyist being required to add words to a vocal part, or to transpose the part into a key other than that written in the score or provide a full keyboard part). Up to one hour of consultation time is covered by the above payments. Further consultation time should be paid for at an appropriate hourly rate. Much copying is now being done by computer notation, and these copyists generally work to an hourly rate. There is not yet a clear market rate established in New Zealand but professional copyists might ask $25–$35 per hour as a reasonable minimum.

For reference we quote below British Music Writers Council minimum page rates (approximated to $NZ) which depend on the type of score:

Single stave parts $5.56

Transposed single stave $6.67

Single stave with multiple parts (divisi) $7.64

Single stave plus chord symbols $7.64

Double stave part $11.11 Solo vocal part inc. 1 line of lyrics per stave $10.83

4-stave choir inc. 2 lines of lyrics $19.44

2-stave choir inc. 1 line of lyrics $13.19

Interestingly, they use two rates, the page rate and the page rate if the part is to be duplicated (including one photocopy). The latter is double the quoted rate. Also quoted for reference are their rates for various tasks which might be useful for commission quotations:

Reduction of score to rehearsal keyboard part (excl. copying) $3 per bar

All photocopying $0.80 per page
